In Cafe Rebetika I described briefly the origins of Rebetika, the music which emerged between the wars from the slums, tavernas, hashdens and prisons of the major Greek cities, and provided links to some Rebetika sites.
This evening at Melbourne Town Hall, Multicultural Arts Victoria, in association with ShivanaMusic, will present A Tribute to the Women of Rembetika, featuring:
- Local singer Anthea Sidiropoulos
- Visiting all-female Greek group, San Mayamennes:
: Christella Demetriou, voice and bouzouki
: Eleftheria Kourlia, voice and guitar
: Sophia Moulakaki, voice and accordion
: Claudia Rossini, voice and violin, and
- Irene Vela, the wonderful musical director of the haBiBis, which provided an excellent supporting performance for the recent visit of Eleftheria Arvanitaki (see Eleftheria in Melbourne).
Promotional material can be found on the ShivanaMusic website here.
